Preparing for a baby? Then it’s time to start taking the folic acid!

Folic acid, which is also known as folate, is a vitamin (B9) and can be found in some of the food listed below:

  • Leafy green vegetables (e.g. spinach), asparagus and broccoli
  • Beans
  • Peanuts
  • Oranges and grapefruits

It helps in the formation of red blood cells, which carries oxygen from the lungs to other parts of a body. It is also a very important supplement for pregnant woman as it will help to reduce and prevent serious birth defects of the brain and spine of the baby.

Folic acid should be taken both before conception (once you’ve decided that you want a baby if you are planning for it) and the whole period of pregnancy, especially during the earlier phase. Most folic acid should come in a pill form of 400 micrograms (which is enough intake for per day) and taken once a day, early in the morning.

It can be bought over the counters in pharmacies or from your own gynaecologist before you conceive. For some prenatal vitamins given by your gynaecologist, it might contain the folic acid too. So you might want to check with your gynaecologist before you start taking too much.
